ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT: This paper presents two extensions to the Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA) method originally proposed by Shi for modeling the response of blocky rock masses to mechanical loading. First, a sub-blocking capability is presented whereby blocks are discretized into sub-blocks. This sub-block capability can be used to obtain a better resolution of stress and strain within a block. An algorithm based on a three-parameter Mohr-Coulomb criterion that allows for shear or tensile fracturing of blocks into smaller blocks represents the second extension.
