ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Two methods of predicting tunnel boring machine (TBM) penetration rates in rock are discussed in relation to site conditions and TBM performance for a 4.3 m diameter and approximately 4.8 km length hard rock tunneling project in northern California. One method relies on methodology for the extrapolation of penetration rates predicted by a TBM manufacturer based on special rock sample tests performed in its laboratory. Another method is based on the analysis of actual TBM performance in relation to rock index properties, particularly Total Hardness, Ht and the Field Penetration Index, Rf, and the definition of the relationship between them.
