Abstract Based on the fractal theory, we conclude two parameters structural function expression which can give a description of rock fracture profiles. From the tensile experiment, fractal dimension can reflect the irregular geometric characteristic of rock materials, while topothesy can describe the texture property of rock fracture surface. The research results show that there is a better correlation between topothesy and the rock tensile strength than fractal dimension, which the topothesy is more sensitive than fractal dimension. By comparison granite with marble, the former fractal dimensions are greater than the later, while the former topothesy values are smaller than the later, and the former variances are smaller than the later. The fracture surface components of granite are more stationary than of marble
