ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: A simple method for estimating fracture size from rock core or borehole images is presented. While the method presented in this paper is limited to circular fractures perpendicular to a borehole, generalizations to other cases are quite feasible. The approach utilizes data that are readily available: the ratio of the number of core-fracture intersections that cut right across the core or borehole to the number of intersections that cut only part way across. The ratio increases with increasing fracture size. This principle is examined and used to develop a simple procedure for estimating fracture size.
