ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT: The nature of stress in coal seams and adjacent rock units is examined for Australian coal basins. The minimum coal stress is less than the vertical stress magnitude, but approaches the vertical stress at depths exceeding 400 m. Sets of measurements averaged over individual boreholes reveal that the average coal stress increases with the average rock stress.
