ABSTRACT: The efficacy of current stope face area support technology and practices was evaluated. In many cases, the supports were unable to carry the imposed loads, yield sufficiently during dynamic (rockburst) loading conditions, and/or provide adequate areal coverage. This is aggravated by operational problems associated with support practices. Typical strata conditions in shallow, intermediate and deep level environments have been identified and an attempt made to define their support requirements. Support systems have subsequently been proposed which emphasise the use of non-removable blast-resistant face area support with adequate areal coverage. Some solutions such as flexibility in the placement of labour in panels; proper stope planning and layout; adequate material transport facilities in stopes; correct marking, drilling and blasting procedures; modification of the current cleaning method etc have been proposed to overcome the operational problems associated with support practices.
