ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT: Self-similar solution of a hydraulic fracture propagating in an impermeable elastic rock under plane strain conditions is considered. Growth of the fracture is driven by injection of an incompressible fluid at the center of the fracture at a constant flow rate. An explicit large toughness asymptotic solution of hydraulic fracture is constructed. This solution governs fracture propagation in the so-called toughness-dominated regime when energy dissipated in the viscous fluid flow is small compared to the energy expended in fracturing the rock. Toughness range of validity of the large toughness asymptotic solution is established.
