In this paper, we present a simple and fast EDFM (Embedded Discrete Fracture Model) method in conjunction with a compositional reservoir simulator to simulate well performance in shale reservoirs with complex fracture geometry. Complex hydraulic fractures and natural fractures can be handled explicitly and effectively. We verify the EDFM method against the traditional local grid refinement (LGR) method for multi-phase flow in a gas-condensate shale reservoir with planar fracture geometry. The EDFM method performs much faster than the LGR method. We also present the impacts of 3D complex hydraulic fractures and natural fractures with varying dip angles on well performance. In addition, we perform history matching and production forecasting using the complex fracture geometry in combination with microseismic data for a field gas-condensate well.
